Hendricks: DVRs Will Force Better Shows

For several years now, the TV industry has been debating whether the Digital Video Recorder will hurt the advertising business. However, Discovery Communications chairman and founder John Hendricks has a new concern about the device's impact on the industry. At yesterday's opening session at this week's cable TV convention in Atlanta, Hendricks said the DVR could force programmers to produce higher-quality shows.

Why?

With the DVR (and on-demand services), viewers have greater control over what they watch and when they watch it. Consequently, Hendricks suggests, they could be more likely to restrict their viewing to top-quality shows.
