TiVo's Stock Jumps On Patent Victory

TiVo's stock jumped 7.5 percent yesterday on the heels on its DVR patent victory over EchoStar last week in a Texas courtroom. However, after reading remarks from some Wall Street analysts, I sense that the industry is becoming aware that the patent victory is significant but not dramatic.

As I noted here last week, TiVo is likely to have more difficulty prosecuting a patent claim against the cable TV industry. Consequently, the EchoStar victory may not have as much influence on forcing cable operators to use TiVo's DVR software as some people first suggested. It will help, but on a small scale rather than a large one.
