Apple's Video iPod In Trouble?

Don't say I didn't tell you.

Newsday is reporting that Apple's video iPod is not living up to its grandiose expectations. Despite Apple's heavily-publicized partnerships with ABC and NBC, which are selling episode downloads for $1.99 each, few Americans are actually watching videos on the device's small, 2.5-inch screen. And those who have are complaining bitterly on Internet message boards that the experience is less than desirable.

Of course, I predicted six months ago when the video iPod was launched that it would be a disaster. I said that consumers would use the device to listen to their favorite tunes but largely ignore the video feature.

It appears that my prediction is on the way to becoming a reality.

I have also predicted that Apple will adjust to the poor results and eventually launch a larger-screen video iPod (7 inches; 10 inches) that just might find a niche. The portable video industry has some potential, but anyone who thinks that a 2.5-inch screen will be part of its future is crazy.
