HDTV: Can the Picture Get Even Better?

High-Definition TV is changing the way we think -- and feel -- about television. The picture is so realistic that it's made watching the tube an emotional experience. We feel like we can see our favorite celebrities, places and things as they look in real life.

But imagine if the HDTV images were 16 times clearer than today. The psychological distance between the viewer and the on-screen activity could be further reduced. Would we even be able to tell the difference between reality and fantasy?

Well, at last week's convention of TV broadcasters in Las Vegas, the Japanese broadcasting company NHK suggested that we may one day find out. The company exhibited what it calls Ultra HD -- a picture technology that provides an image 16 times clearer than current high-def sets.

NHK officials concede that ultra HD may not reach the marketplace for another 20 years. But the display is more evidence that TV technology is advancing faster than we can imagine.
