Survey: Frequent DVD Users Not Ready for HDTV DVD

A survey by Peerflix shows that only one in five 'high-volume' DVD users may buy or rent High-Definition TV DVD players or discs this year. Reuters quotes a Peerflix executive as saying that it may be a year before frequent DVD viewers embrace the new technology. (Peerflix is an online DVD trading company.)

The survey results are not surprising considering the negative word of mouth that has surrounded the launch of the new HDTV DVD players. (Toshiba's new HD-DVD player was launched a month ago; Sony's rival Blu-ray player is expected to be introduced in late spring.) Many consumers are leery of getting trapped in a format war similar to the VHS-Beta battle of the 1980s. In addition, many frequent DVD viewers still haven't purchased a high-def set, which is necessary to display the HDTV DVDs.
