Why I Left Comcast for Verizon
It is not surprising to see the report that Steve Burke at Comcast has acknowledged that the telcos (such as Verizon's FiOS) are making some inroads on their customer base. I am a long time Comcast subscriber who switched to FiOS in February. I am also one of many in my township that have switched, a lot more than I would have expected. Why? The reasons are
numerous.
First is price. Comcast was getting too expensive. I was able to increase my broadband speed and add a number of HD channels (with FiOS) and still save about $25 a month. The second and almost as important was the improvement in the quality of my picture both in regards to standard definition channels where there was a noticable improvement as well as an improvement in even the HD channels. As an example, I was shocked to see how much better Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia looked on FiOS compared to Comcast. Now that was a shocker.
Third, pure arrogance on the part of Comcast. Frankly, they thought they could increase rates substantially every year with impunity due in part to the lack of DBS competition in the Philadelphia market due to the lack of CSN Philadelphia on DBS. When the FiOS deal with our township was struck, I called Comcast a few times over two months to see if I could get a better deal. Despite the fact that I said I was contemplating switching to FiOS, they would not move an inch. The response was you will be back soon. Once FiOS ws up and running, off I went.
After I called to terminate Comcast, all of a sudden the deals were being offered. Too late.
Fourth, HDNet. For some reason that completely escapes me, Comcast refuses to add HDNet and HDNet Movies. I have them on my limited DIRECTV subscription and love them, although I was not happy with the PQ on those channels due to Directv's "HD Lite". On FiOS they look FANTASTIC. After nearly 8 months of FiOS, I am not surprised that Comcast is losing customers. The new deals they are constantly offering me. Deals on the triple play and then a "double play" with triple play rates. I almost next expect them to pay me to use their service.
Is FiOS perfect? No. They have been having some growing pains. Their roll out of new HD is way too slow. While it would be nice if they added some HD VOD, I don't miss it. It would be nice if they would add the software to stream HD content from the DVR to any HD box in the house. However, I have learned to be patient. Providing me with excellent PQ makes it a lot
easier to be patient!

Well said Sir. I'm with you especially on the PQ part. Price was not much of a factor b/c Comcast and FiOS are within about $10 of each other here in Ric., VA.
The Fios triple play is a superior
product to cable triple play. Have had Fios triple play since March 07. Number one reason for switching
from cable was to get Comcast Sportsnet Philly which my cable company did not provide in Princeton, NJ (Comcast bought my
cable company Sept. 1st and now provides CSN). The reliability of the Fios triple play
will keep me as a Fios sub. The 20/5 Internet has never gone down. The speed far exceeds cable. The router never goes down, and telephone is 100 percent reliable.
Anyone that I know with cable VOIP
phone and works from home, also
has Verizon phone as a backup because of occasional VOIP phone
outages.
The Verizon triple play has lowered
prices and I am very happy with
the bundle savings. Cable in my area still has not reduced its basic prices.
Comcast's HD channel lineup is dead last out of the four MVPD's available to me, Fios, Directv and
Dish Network. Fios has the best
HD and SD picture quality of all
four MVPD's.
I have fios for internet and its fantastic (faster up and down speeds than the business connection where I work).
But for television, I dumped the cable AND satellite companies almost 8 years ago and haven't missed them one bit. I haven't tried fios TV nor do I intend to.
I put an antenna on my roof and get about 20 all digital and high definition channels (cbs, abc*2, nbc*2, pbs*2, fox, cw, my*2, NJN, pax*3, uni*2). I really don't miss any of the paid content at all, and my high definition picture quality is pretty much the best you can get (no additional compression with over the air signals).
I had high definition monday night football starting in 1999 - this was YEARS before any cable or satelite company had any significant high def offerings.
COMCAST FLAT OUT SUCKS THERE PRICES ARE TO HIGH AND THE PIC SUCKS
Moving NFL Network was the last straw for me with Comcast. They wanted to charge me more for something I was already paying for. And they wouldn't even give me a refund when they took it away. Enough was enough. I've had Verizon Fios for two months and couldn't be more pleased. Installation was a breeze and everything has been smooth and easy to use.
I'm on the verge of switching from DirecTV to FIOS.
The only thing holding me back is the up-front cost of buying Series 3 Tivos to use with FIOS cablecards (there's no way I'm going from HD DirecTivo to a slow Motorola box), and (this is just stubbornness on my part) the lack of MSNBC on FIOS.
I've been with DirecTV since I stuck a ten foot aluminum poll in a bucket of cement on an apartment balcony seven years ago, but I think it's time to go.
Former Comcast customer in Northern NJ. Went with the Fios triple play June '07. Phone service is excellent, avoids the old copper infrastructure in my neighborhood which is archaic and noisy. Big selling point to me is that it's NOT Voip and has backup in emergencies. I remember the big blackout when mobile phones were useless but the wired phones worked just fine. Have no complaints with the internet - went with the 15, fast and reliable. As a three HD TV home we appreciate the quality of the picture on all tiers including the very small analog tier - which looks waaaaaay better than Comcasts 1-99 channel analog tier. More channels in standard def digital than Comcast. Wish they would add more HD and HD on demand. I do miss Current, and even MSNBC, but HDNet more than makes up for no InHD. The install guys were great, even rewired a couple of runs in the house that ,they were not happy with, no small task BTW. Oh, and yeah it is a bit cheaper.
before 2002 i was with cableone here in idaho,i to saw price go up and was getting no added channles.so i switch to directv, and been happy with it.now cable people walk my neighborhood, and offering the triple play. i did the math, wants and needs.i have internet, phone, and dtv.
1)math with the triple play i would not save any money.i would have less channels.oh yeah i will be paying a promo price for about six mos, and the price will go up from there
2)i don't need a home phone i have a cell,a home phone would not do me any good, all my calls are made to and from my cell phone.the internet. cable says they have faster speed, but, i will be sharing that bandwidth with mile's and miles on cable and other people in my nerigh
horhood.too much diretv is where i am going to stay.
Couldn't agree more. Although I did enjoy getting the MLB package on Comcast, the years of rate increases was enough. MLB packaged ended on Sunday, FIOS was installed on Monday! Looking forward to seeing the extra football games on NFL Network HD.
So far, the FIOS picture quality is great. The "analog" channels I use to get on Comcast are remarkably better on FIOS. HD is slightly better on FIOS, but there is also more HD channels. Overall, I'm very satisfied.
FIOS Wish List:
Better DVR interface
NESN/YES Sports networks (I live in FL)
PIP - I heard an update is coming for that.
I discovered HDNet and HDNet Movies when our area was still served by Adelphia. Then this past winter Comcast took over and dropped both channels. I have spoken with Comcast on several times about adding the channels but they keep blowing me off. I've even told them I would pay extra, but they will not budge.
Unfortunately I'm on the north side of an apartment building, so satellite is not an option. That's why I'm looking forward to FIOS.
I switched to Verizon Fios as soon as they came to Tampa and was one of the first to do so almost 2 years ago. I believe their product is superior but their customer service is the worst of any major company. Add to it that their customer service is only open Monday - Friday until 6pm. I don't even get home till at least 6pm. Not sure about other areas but BrightHouse (TimeWarner) is about the same in price here for similar service. True there is no NFL Network on BrightHouse but on Verizon there's no NBA TV or NHL Network nor can you add NBA League Pass or any type of NFL Ticket packages. So I'm switching back to BrightHouse...I truly don't think that Verizon is ready yet. Plus if you ever have a problem with Verizon on the weekend (say when you are watching NFL Network)...be prepared to wait until Monday when you can talk to someone. I don't think either are great at all...I wish there would be some sort of super company that could come in and take care of it...but for me I'm going with the lesser of the two evils...similar to voting anymore.
I am dropping comcast this week. The company has been pursuing an anti-Catholic strategy re-moving EWTN from the basic cable package to the premier digital package. Their internet home page is filled with lewd and perverted so called news of the day which is not something I want myself or children exposed to. The Dish has a family package that will allow me to save 50% on my cable bill. Fios isn't availble yet but the Verizon powerplan will allow me to write a very pointed cancelation note to comcast sometime next week.

Isn't that the Christian thing to do! You make me sick. You are the perfect reason why people abandon Jesus...who wants to be in heaven with people like you? I'd rather be in hell with all the nice, non-judgemental Atheists!

Here is my experience to share
I had Comcast Analog $54.00
I had Comcast Internet $39.95 5/720
I had comcast Phone $39.95
Total Per Month - $133.90
I asked too for better price and was denied, So I started the Process one at a time. Phone First, then Internet, and just did cable.
I changed to:
Vonage $19.99
FIOS Internet $39.99
FIOS Digital $42.99
Set top box Rental $4.99
Networked DVR $19.99
Total 127.95
Additional thoughts Benefits
I for opted for getting the lowest ongoing price rather than get the specials because I have learned I don't have the discipline to check dates the specials run out and then I get wacked with the regular charges.
There is really not a lot of value of the gimick all on one bill. My all on one bill is automatic bill my discover card for each service
Phone - I went low cost provider 20.00 savings and much more feature rich service controllable from Portal.
Internet - Faster Upload Same price
FIOS Cable - Many More stations + HD + a Networked DVR. comparable Comcast would be in the $91.00 range
So for about $5.00 less, I have a more feature rich Phone Service, a faster Internet Service, Many More Cable and HD Channels, a Networked DVR that can be played on either TV. This is freaking cool!!!
The $5.00 I am saving will go to my cell provider ;-)
