Katie Daryl On HD

The host of HDNet's Deadline! spins on life in the high-def lane.

What Do Porn Stars Think About HDTV?

(At the Erotica LA festival) I actually asked the porn stars how they felt about HD. Randy Spears said he heard it would show his pores; Belladonna had only heard of it and not seen it but was told she should be worried! Ron Jeremy was very familiar with HDNet and the world of HD and recognized the format as the wave of the future! I've got it all on tape and ready to roll out in a few weeks for everyone to see (on Deadline)!

Six More Questions With HDNet's Katie Daryl

Katie Daryl, host of HDNet's Deadline and the indie music show True Music, takes six more questions from the readers of TVPredictions.com.

Do those randy young musicians on True Music ever 'hit' on you? -- Frank R. (Editor's Note: Katie interviews different musicians every week on True Music.)
Not as much as you'd think! The interviews usually take place 15 minutes before the band does their sound check so it's typically a rushed environment and the bands' minds are scattered. I have a had a few date requests, but I've declined. I'm always up for making a friend and supporting a new group, but going out on a date is a no-go. Plus, most of these bands are touring acts, it would be silly to go out on a date with some drummer, end up liking him, and then not seeing him again for 4-6 months!

Where do you get all your energy? You always seem so perky and happy! -- Gina S.
Thanks for noticing! I do try to keep my energy levels up for the shows. I'm a pretty spunky person to begin with, but usually right before the shoots I mellow out. I read the bands' bios, or scribble notes about the festival we are at for Deadline and I sort of keep to myself. I store up the energy and then BOOM! When we start rolling tape, I am ready to have fun.

What is (HDNet co-founder) Mark Cuban like? -- Aaron R.
I am very lucky to have met Mark. I actually first started working with him when I co-hosted 'The Mark Cuban Show' on CBS/UPN in Dallas. I did the show with Mark for 2 seasons and had some of the best times of my life. Getting to meet so many NBA players, go to two All Star Games, hang out in locker rooms, I mean come on, what a great experience and I owe that all to Mark. Mark took a chance on me by letting me put together a pilot for True Music, and here we are 5 years later and I've interviewed over 500 bands. I was honored when HDNet then offered me my second gig as Deadline's host. So, I have nothing but awesome things to say about Mark. He is smart, fun, open minded and he doesn't give out bad seats to Mavs games either!

Is there any way to submit HD video for Deadline? -- Mark S.
Yes! Yes! YES! If you have any Deadline! story ideas or you've shot some Deadline! worthy material please let us know!
deadline@hd.net is the best way to email the Deadline! team.

Do people ever recognize you when you walk around the street? -- Kim P.
Yup, they do. Not a crazy amount, but casually each week I probably have 5-10 people say hello to me whether I'm at the mall, a concert or out to dinner. It's funny when I go out for Deadline! to events like Adult Con, Mardi Gras, or Erotica LA...boy we have a lot of viewers and Katie Daryl fans at those places!

Will you ever be on Get Out!? You're better looking than some of the girls on the show. -- Bob T. (Editor's Note: Get Out! is a program on HDNet starring Lindsay Clubine and other women who usually wear bikinis.)
Thanks for the props! Those girls seem to always have fun adventures together. I might be a loose cannon if they put me in the mix. Think about all the F-Bombs I'd end up dropping while bungee jumping or waterfall diving; they'd fire me for sure! I do my best work in jeans and a T-Shirt; if I had to do it in a bikini, all I'd be able to think about is nachos and sucking in my belly!

Six Questions With Katie Daryl

Katie Daryl, host of HDNet's True Music and Deadline, answers some questions from the readers of TVPredictions.com:

Have you always been interested in music, particularly lesser known bands like those on True Music? -- Paul M.
To be honest -- No! I grew up around music. I loved listening to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and later things like Tracy Chapman, Paul Simon and Morphine. It wasn't until I moved to Dallas and started working on an FM talk radio program called 'The Ron and Don Show" that I got into the music scene and up and coming acts. On our radio show we would invite local bands from the Dallas area to come in one day a week and we would play a song on the air and have listeners vote on whether it was good or not. We also would invite a music industry insider onto the show to give feedback and advice to the bands. After doing this for several months I found I had a rolodex of bands and something cool to go out and do every weekend thanks to meeting all these neat musicians. When I was no longer working with the radio show I found myself still enjoying the local scene and indie music. It was then that I happened to meet Mark Cuban and was able to pitch him my idea for True Music!

The people on Deadline seem like a bunch of nut jobs. How do you find them all? -- Cathy K.
I know!!! We have so many interesting and...um...unique characters on Deadline. We have HD cameras all over the globe and the camera people, or as we call them, 'Stringers,' pitch us the different stories they find in their local town. So most often we are enlightened by the Stringers, but sometimes we (at HDNet) read a story online or hear about it on the news and then send our stringers out to cover it in a near by city. Deadline is so lucky that people have a sense of humor and will let us participate in their festivals, parties, jobs and other crazy scenarios!

Are you married? -- Tom B.
Nope, not married. But I did get a psychic reading on Deadline a week ago and the lady said I would get a proposal in the next 3 years and then have 2 kids. GASP!!&^%

What's it like to be on a HDTV channel? -- Jason P.
You know what's funny: HD is all I really know! My career started in radio and then I did a year with MTV, but for the last ( almost ) 6 years I've been all HD baby! I love it. It is so crystal clear it's like looking in the mirror. I'm a confident chick and not self conscious about my looks so the HD quality is not stressful. However, the days ( like today) when I wake up with a crazy zit I do get a bit pissed. Luckily I have a GREAT make up artist who can fix anything.

What do want to do with your career? Is HDNet a stepping stone to MTV? -- Sharlene E.
Well, well, well. Someone needs to read my bio! I actually did a year with MTV covering the 2000 presidential election! So been there, done that!

I get asked this question all the time ( especially from family). I'm honestly really happy. It's hard to find a job that you actually enjoy. I live out in LA and I look around at all the struggling actresses who are waiting tables and would probably love to have my job. I don't take it for granted- I'm a lucky girl.

Seriously, I go to concerts and interview rock bands for a living on True Music and then get to go out on wacky adventures and meet some totally interesting people on Deadline. I'm not censored, I say what comes to my mind, I get to be funny and sometimes rude and I get a paycheck. I hope HDNet and I can have a long relationship together. Look at Mary Hart on Entertainment Tonight- she started on that show back in 1982 and is still going strong. I think when a company/show starts out and has a personality to grow with it, a great lasting relationship and partnership can only flourish.

Do you play music yourself? If so, where can I see you perform? -- Ian R.
I wish! I bought a guitar almost 8 years ago and it still sits in the corner giving me the evil eye. I do dust it about twice a week though! Oooh, I play Guitar Hero with my next door neighbor, does that count?
