Verizon, Where's My HDTV!?

After being almost invisible at CES, I was hoping that we would have heard more from Verizon by this point concerning their addition of new HD channels to their FiOS service. However, the silence has been deafening. We were promised up to 80 HD channels from the current 30 or so by the spring, but this was back in the fall. Spring is about a month away and yet we have heard nothing additional, with the exception that the MGM HD channel will be added some time before the end of the year. Big deal.

How about an update on their build out with a clear date as to when the build out will be completed? How about a list of the HD channels that will be added once the build out has been completed? How about some real information! While it is impressive that FiOS now has over a million subscribers, Verizon will not be able to continue with their current rate of growth without the addition of a significant number of new HD channels along with the addition of HD VOD. While Verizon’s FiOS service has excellent picture quality especially with standard definition channels, FiOS has no real future as a provider of excellent SD quality. The future is HD.

So, a word of unsolicited advice to my friends at Verizon. Get out and announce your plans. Come out with some specifics as to time tables and channel additions. Show that you are willing and able to compete with Directv and Dish on the number of HD channel offerings as well as Comcast on their number of HD offerings i.e HD VOD. Challenging the competition on both of these fronts along with stellar picture quality will be very hard to beat. Get with it Verizon -- and soon!

Can't agree with you more. I'm a DirecTV customer today with the option of Comcast and FiOS. I will never go with Comcast because their offering stink and cost more than anyone. Once FiOS can offer me the HD channels I get today on DirecTV I will make the move to FiOS even though pricing is better with DirecTV. I just want to lose the dish because I'm sick of paying for equipment upgrades. Even though they say your renting the equipment. I'm sorry paying $300 up front for a HD DVR then a monthly charge is not renting to me. It's buying quipment and paying a monthly charge for the connection of the box.

This article should be more like:

Where is FIOS? I live in Los Angeles (Bel Air), aka Verizon Country, and FIOS is nowhere to be seen!
I am sick and tired of hearing about FIOS. As far as i'm concerned it is a niche product for Verizon which they don't intend on bringing to my family.

I would consider using it, but... it aint available to me. Nor will Verizon offer any information on when it will be available.

probably a great product if you can get it, maybe less great for TV service. But for internet via fiber? it's probably kicking.

I checked into Fios here in Beaverton Oregon and what a joke. Packages start at $42.95. The it is $15.99 per HD DVR box. That's robbery what if you have 3 HD HDVR' sin your house OUCH. I will stay with Directv and keep getting the best deals thru rentention. Plus Sunday ticket!!!

Fios in the Richmond VA area is more expensive than Comcast when you get either triple play package from either company. I shopped around and stayed with Comcast. Comcast even threw in free premium movies channels [HBO, Starz, Showtime, Encore plus their HD channels since I have a HD-DVR] plus two more free cable boxes with a two year contract. Fios acted like they did not want my business. The only advantage to having Fios in our area is that it makes Comcast give us more HD channels sooner than other Comcast areas [although many Comcast areas have very few HD channels compared to the many that the Richmond VA are market has].

Wow...that's outrageous. And I thought FiOS was supposed to swoop in and provide some much needed competition to the cable monsters like Comcast. I got so fed up with shelling money out to comcast all the time, and at that point my only other option was satellite tv. I ended up signing up with Dish Network through a 3rd party retailer called All American Dish (not something I would normally do , but my brother referred me and got a comp..whatever,it ended up being fine) and got my HD DVR for free and only have to pay $5.98 a month for service. Plus, it's only an extra $5 to add another box. I've heard Uverse from ATT is pretty good too, but I think the prices went up from when they first introduced it. As far as I can tell satellite is still the cheaper option for me.
