Will Blockbuster Go Bust?
The Wall Street reports that video retail giant Blockbuster is looking to restructure the company and some analysts are wondering if it will consider bankruptcy. Blockbuster, however, is denying that for now.
From WSJ:
"Movie-rental chain Blockbuster Inc. has hired law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP to explore restructuring options, from refinancing its debt to filing for bankruptcy protection if the company cannot quickly resolve its liquidity issues, according to people familiar with the situation.

The Dallas-based company said it had hired the firm to help with "ongoing finance and capital raising initiatives" but said it does "not intend" to file for bankruptcy protection. Blockbuster shares fell 77% to 22 cents on the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday before trading was halted."

First I get an HD-DVD player, then they go bust and I can't get any more HD-DVD's. Blockbuster rents Blu-Ray's, so I get a Blu-Ray player. Now Blockbuster may go bust, and I refuse to buy Blu-Ray's (I stopped buying DVD's years ago because I only watched most movies once or twice).
This whole Hi Def video thing has been one big debacle.
I get my DVD's and Blu-Ray's at the library for free and they aren't usually behind on the new releases either.
No need for Blockbuster with VUDU.
No need for Blockbuster with VUDU and Netflix.
"This whole Hi Def video thing has been one big debacle."
What? Even if Blockbuster does go under (and I highly doubt they will) there are many places to rent Blu-ray discs. Just in my town I can choose between Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, and Video Warehouse, not to mention Netflix. The "Hi Def video thing" has been great for the market and even better for my entertainment center at home.
Long live Netflix.
Joined Blockbuster and they're sucks.
Have been Netflix subscriber for years and they
just keep getting better.
Blockbuster needs to concentrate on either online or stores. You just can't have it both. Why would I want to pay 5 dollars a movie where I can get it from Redbox for a dollar.
Online is the way to go right now. Close all the stores and open distribution centers for the online rental.
If they keep all their stores open. I don't think they'll make it through 2009 in this tough economics time.
The only alternative to Blockbuster here was Hollywood Video and they went out of business over a year ago. I did Netflix back in '97. I don't want to pay 8 bucks a month or whatever they charge because movies are so lame these days I sometimes go months without renting a movie, so it's a waste of money for me.
I stick by my statement. It's been a debacle.
Sorry, '99
"big debacle" AMEN! dish and directv hd programming prices rediculous and sony with thier HDCP rendors most hardware components useless. and bluray beat out hd dvd because the consumer electronics industry and content providers seen a chance to increase profits by never allowing the customer to truely own the content (only lease)and constant hardware updates to bluray players to insure complete control of devices. if it were not for OTA DTV, i would say the whole hdtv thing was a scam. i can only hope all the companies that supported hdcp and bluray go bankrupt. that includes sony, dish, directv, blockbuster etc...and the funny thing is that all of these corporate CEOs live in a bubble and refuse to recognize its not the bad economy that is killing hd, it is the early adopters they bled dry are now spreading the word that it just is not worth it.
