TV Makers: Rearranging the Deck Chairs?
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (August 9, 2011)
-- Panasonic, Samsung and Sony are teaming to develop a new
standard for active 3D glasses as part of the 'Full HD 3D
Glasses Initiative.'
With research firm SNL Kagan saying that 3D TV sales are likely
to fall below last year's disappointing numbers, one could argue
that the effort could be called the 'Rearrange the Deck Chairs
Initiative.' (SNL Kagan says fewer than two million homes will
have 3D TVs by year's end._
But the three TV makers, who are joined by glasses company Xpand,
are hoping that a new standard will appeal to consumers who have
expressed concern about buying 3D goggles for one set that may
not be compatible with other sets.
"We
hope the expanded collaboration on this 3D standardization
initiative will make a significant contribution toward
accelerating the growth of 3D-related products," Panasonic said
in a joint statement.
However, surveys have indicated that consumers are not terribly
interested in wearing any 3D glasses while watching 3D TV;
additionally, there's been little interest in watching 3D at
all.
The TV makers said they hope the new glasses will be available
next year and they will be 'backwards compatible' with 3D active
TVs released in 2012.
