Analyst: America Tired Of 3D Movies
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (May 24, 2011) -- One prominent Wall Street analyst says America's love affair with 3D movies is over. That is, if it ever started.

That's according to an article by Home Media Magazine.

Richard Greenfield, an analyst with BTIG Research, notes that the 3D showings of the new release Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides fared poorly compared to 3D movies released in May 2010.

Pirates' box office represented 38 percent of all box office revenue, compared to 57 percent for How to Train Your Dragon and 54 percent for Shrek Forever After in May 2010. Furthermore, Pirates generated roughly 850 viewers per screen, compared to 1,129 viewers per screen for Shrek Forever Aftter and 1,049 viewers for Dragon.

“If the exhibitors’ goal is to fill seats (and sell popcorn), pushing 3D screens is starting to work against them,” Greenfield wrote in a note to his clients, according to Home Media.

Greenfield argues that if theater owners had promoted Pirates in 2D, instead of 3D, ticket sales would have increased because consumers know that theaters are charging more for the 3D showings.

The analyst says the studios and theater owners should reduce the number of 3D films and concentrate more on 2D movies.

If Greenfield's forecast is true, it will be more bad news for TV makers who are trying peddle new 3D TVs.
