Samsung Dominating Flaccid 3D TV Market

Washington, D.C. (July 5, 2011) -- Samsung is dominating the 3D TV sales market, capturing a 61 percent in the United States, according to the NPD Group.

The research firm says Samsung, which makes both LED and Plasma 3DTVs, took the 61 percent share from the period of May 22 to June 18. From April to May, the TV maker captured 50 percent of the 3DTV sales.

The NPD figures were released in a Samsung press release so figures for other TV makers were not available today. Panasonic, Vizio and Sony are some of the other CE companies that are manufacturing 3D sets.

In the press release, Samsung credited its market share in part to the company's decision to lower prices for both the sets and the 3D glasses. As of May 1, Samsung's battery operated 3D Active glasses are $49.99. In addition, consumers purchasing select Samsung 3D TVs from authorized Samsung retailers will receive two pairs of 3D 'Active' glasses free of cost.

“Clearly consumers are voting with their wallets and choosing the TV that provides a superior 3D experience,” said John Revie, senior vice president of home entertainment for Samsung.

Okay, Samsung must be proud that it's selling more 3D TVs than its competitors. But a recent Kagan study found that overall 3D TV sales are likely to be even lower in 2011 than they were in 2010.

Yes, that's right. Even lower than 2010 when 3D TV sales reached only about one million.
