And the Plasma HDTV, the Panasonic TC-P55GT30, is priced today at just $1,484 -- roughly 35 percent off the regular list price.

The 55-inch set comes with a wireless LAN adaptor which connects to the side of the unit. This allows you to connect the set with your wireless home network, which opens the doors to dozens of Internet apps such as Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, MLB.TV, Accuweather, Picasa, Pandora, Ustreaming and YouTube.

But let me add a personal note here: I actually own this set and I'm very happy with it. While admittedly I rarely watch 3D on the Panasonic unit, the 2D picture is spectacular, the best I've seen yet. Plus, the wireless Internet connection has thus far worked flawlessly with the Net video picture looking sharp and crisp.

(Also: My wife loves this set, too, and that indeed is high praise; she can be a tough sell, believe me. But her TV viewing has probably jumped about 50 percent since we installed the set in our living room.)
