Q. I have the
DIRECTV Genie HD DVR and I love it, but I have one big problem.
When I try to do the 30-second Fast-Forward past a commercial,
the machine sometimes jumps all the way to the end of the show.
Then I have to rewind all the way back to the spot where I was
watching, which is very annoying. Is there any way to fix
DIRECTV has received numerous complaints about the Fast-Forward
feature on the Genie HD DVR (HR34), from picture freezing while
it's fast-forwarding to fast-forwarding 30 minutes or more
instead of 30 seconds, as you have experienced. It's doesn't
happen all the time, nor does it happen on every Genie, but it's
become a frequent problem among Genie owners.
The satcaster's customer service reps have told
TVPredictions.com readers that there's a software bug that the
company is trying to fix.
So until it gets fixed by DIRECTV, there are a few things
can try to fix it.
One, re-set your receiver by hitting the red button on the front
of the receiver. Some readers have reported that this will work
for awhile, but the problem comes back. Others say it's fixed
the problem. So it's worth a try.
Second, you can program your Genie HD DVR to '30Skip,' which
might keep each Fast-Forward touch to 30 seconds rather than 30
minutes. Here's how you do it:
Press the Menu button on your
Then click on the 'Search and Browse' header. After that, click
on Smart Search and then hit Select. At that point, you type in
the word, 30SKIP.
Next, press the (RED) button on your remote and make sure the
'ALL" header is highlighted. If it is, hit Select.
You'll then see a line that reads, "There are no matching
programs at this time."
Press Exit and you're done!
At this point when you watch a record show, the Fast-Forward
button will automatically skip 30 seconds every time you touch
it. Since commercials are usually produced in 30-second spots,
all you have to do is hit the FF button 4 or 5 times when a
commercial break begins. This should take you back to the
beginning of the next scene following the break.
If you want to return to the regular Fast Forward Skip, which
displays the commercial on screen as you fast forward past it,
repeat the same steps as above but type in 30SLIP instead of
Several readers have said 30Skip has solved their FF issues
while a few still complain of picture freezing and other issues.
But give it a try. It might
be your solution.
