Is DIRECTV Going to Add Epix?

Q. I noticed that DIRECTV is changing the numbers on some channels effective July 31. Looks like it's making room for a movie channel. Any chance that DIRECTV will add the Epix channel? -- Wayne, Fairfax, Virginia.

Wayne, I have noticed as well that DIRECTV is realigning its channel lineup in the 500-channel range. Several movie channels, such as The Movie Channel and the Sundance Channel, will get new channel numbers. Here's a list for your perusal.

I can see why you might think DIRECTV is going to add Epix or some other movie channel because there will now be a gap between channel numbers 557 and 564. But let me remind you of our report that DIRECTV is testing some new HD channels, including the Playboy channel, so it's also possible that Playboy will be squeezed in there.

But to address your question specifically, I don't believe DIRECTV has any plans to add the Epix channel. In case you are not familiar with Epix, the movie channel is owned by a consortium of MGM, Lionsgate and Paramount. With the three studios behind it, it sometimes gets access to new movies earlier than other premium channels.

But DIRECTV has never shown any interest in adding Epix, saying publicly that it believes it has enough premium movie channels.

I would not be surprised to see DIRECTV add another movie channel in HD in the 500 channel range, perhaps the Reelz channel. But it won't be Epix. You can bet on it.
