Netflix: How Do I Improve My Video Quality?

Q. I really like Netflix's streaming service, but I wonder if I have Netflix on the right setting for the best picture quality. How can I tell? -- David, Gaithersburg, Maryland.

David, good question. Many people don't know that Netflix has a setting in your account where you can control how much bandwidth you use and what kind of picture quality you want. This is very useful if your Internet Service provider has a data restriction on your monthly plan; by lowering the picture quality slightly, you can also reduce the amount of data you use and possibly lower your monthly bill.

Here's how it works: Go to this Netflix page which is titled, "Manage Bandwidth Usage." On the page, you will see three options:

1. Good (Picture) Quality -- uses up to 0.3 GB per hour.
2. Better (Picture) Quality -- uses up to 0.7 GB per hour.
3. Best (Picture) Quality -- uses up to
1 GB per hour, up to 2.8 GB per hour if watching HD.

Then, you will click on the Netflix/Video Quality link at the top of the page to determine which setting you want.

If you don't have any concerns about data restrictions, definitely select the Best Quality option. But, again, if your Internet plan
charges you by the amount of data you use each month, you might want to see if you can get by with the Best Picture Quality option or even the Good Quality.
