Can You Record 10 Shows at Once?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (July 24, 2013) - Editor's Note: TV's Answer Man, aka Swanni, takes your questions regarding how to best use the latest products and services in TV technology. If you have a question about TV technology, ask TV's Answer Man by sending an e-mail to

Q. I saw DIRECTV's commercial that says its HD DVR can record five shows at the same time. But is there a DVR that record even more shows? -- Bonnie, Pasadena, California.

Bonnie, there is. Two, in fact. But there's a catch with one of them.

Dish's Hopper HD DVR allows viewers to record up to six shows at the same time. However,

it can record six shows at once because it will automatically record the four major networks in primetime plus two shows of your own choosing.

You don't actually get to choose the six shows you want to record. With DIRECTV, you can choose the five channels you want to record.

But there's a new player in the DVR recording sweepstakes. Cablevision's network-based DVR, which costs $12.95 a month, can now record up to 10 shows at the same time. That's 10 shows while you're watching a different live or recorded program.

The cable operator is able to offer so much recording capability because the DVR service is in "the cloud" rather than in a set-top that has limited storage,
(The cloud means the information is stored on Cablevision's servers, not in your set-top.)

Now you could make a case that you couldn't find 10 shows on at the same time that you would want to record. But Cablevision apparently believes you can.
