WatchESPN: Can You Watch it Outside Your Home?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (September 15, 2013) - Editor's Note: TV's Answer Man, aka Swanni, takes your questions regarding how to best use the latest products and services in TV technology. If you have a question about TV technology, ask TV's Answer Man by sending an e-mail to swann@tvpredictions.com

Q. I read your article about Comcast's live streaming features and I have a big question. With WatchESPN, can you watch it when you are not at home? Or does it need to be connected to your wireless network? I am thinking of getting Comcast and this is huge. -- Dale, Boston.

Dale,
you are referring to our article that compared DIRECTV's live streaming features to Comcast's offering. For those who haven't read it, click here.

Comcast does have the rights to offer WatchESPN, the sports network's
web site that simulcasts ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Goal, ESPNNews, ESPNDeportes, ESPN Buzzer Beater and ESPN 3, which airs games not available on the cable TV channels.

And unlike many streaming services provided by TV operators, yes, you can watch WatchESPN outside your home without using any kind of wireless network.

I've tested it on my iPad and it works great. This weekend, in fact, I was away from home and I pulled out my tablet to check out ESPN's Saturday college football coverage. Using my iPad's 4G Internet, I was able to tune in to every game on the WatchESPN site and the video quality and streaming reliability was very good.

I am a Comcast video subscriber, which enables me to do this. If you don't have Comcast, you'll have to check with your local cable service to see if, first, WatchESPN is offered and, second, if it can be viewed away from your wireless network. (Note: ESPN's web site says you can watch WatchESPN while away from home, but you might want to double-check with your TV provider.)

If it can, and you're a sports fan, I think you'll find watching WatchESPN wherever you are a real trip.
