Should I Get a DIRECTV Genie HD DVR or DIRECTV Tivo?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (October 2, 2013) - Editor's Note: TV's Answer Man, aka Swanni, takes your questions regarding how to best use the latest products and services in TV technology. If you have a question about TV technology, ask TV's Answer Man by sending an e-mail to

Q. I loved TiVo 10 years ago and I can get the DIRECTV Tivo for free (through a current DIRECTV offer). Or, should I pay a little more for the (DIRECTV) Genie? Which is best? -- Vetters, LaHabra, California.

Vetters, 10 years ago, TiVo was just about the only game in town when it came to DVRs. The cable and satellite operators were just beginning to develop their own DVRs. So if you wanted to record your favorite shows, TiVo was pretty much it.
However, since then, the cable and satellite DVRs have evolved and, arguably, they are even better than TiVo.

Not only that, to specially address your question, the DIRECTV Genie HD DVR is 10 times better than the DIRECTV TiVo HD DVR. If you don't believe me, just ask DIRECTV itself. The satcaster has published a short web page explaining some of the ways that its company-branded HD DVR is better than the DIRECTV TiVo HD DVR.

That's not TiVo's fault. Under the marketing agreement it has with DIRECTV, the DIRECTV TiVo HD DVR doesn't have many of the features that the standalone TiVo HD DVR offers, such as streaming capacity.

To see some of the differences between the Genie and the DIRECTV TiVo, click here. But here are some examples: The DIRECTV Genie HD DVR can record five shows at the same time; the DIRECTV TiVo can only record two shows at the same time. The Genie has a 1TB storage capacity while the DIRECTV TiVo has 500GB. The Genie allows you to watch two channels at the same time with picture-in-picture; the DIRECTV TiVo can not.

Get the picture? The standalone TiVo, particularly its new
Roamio HD DVR, offers some very cool features. But the DIRECTV TiVo set-top doesn't compare to the Genie or most other state-of-the-art DVRs.

Vetters, if I was you, I would choose the Genie.
