By Swanni

Q. I know you've written before how to skip 30 seconds at a time on the DIRECTV remote control to avoid commercials, but how about Comcast's remote? -- Richard, Boston.

Richard, you're right. I wrote an article last February explaining how to skip 30 seconds at a time on DIRECTV HD DVR. If you didn't see the article, here it is.

There are two ways to program your Comcast remote to skip 30 seconds at a time, which should be enough to skip your average commercial. How you program it will depend on what kind of set-top you have.

If you have the new Motorola DVR,, Comcast's customer forums and all suggest the following steps to program the remote:

Press the AUX button on the remote.
2. Press and hold the SETUP button until the AUX button blinks twice.
3. Then, type in 01376. Your AUX should then blink twice again.
4. Press and hold SETUP again until the AUX button blinks twice yet again.
5. Then, type in 994. Yes, the AUX button will blink twice.
6. Press SETUP
7. Then, type in 00173.
8. Press the CABLE button.

Then, finally, press the button on the remote that you want to be your 30-second skip button. It can be any button. When you touch the button, the CABLE button should blink twice and you're done.

Now, says programming the new Comcast X1 remote is a lot easier. You press the EXIT button three times and then punch in 0030. The web site says the Page Up button then becomes a 30-second skip button and the Page Down button skips back 15 seconds.
