Can I Get WatchESPN On a Roku?

Q.  I heard that Roku has added the WatchESPN channel. Is that true? Does this mean that I can get WatchESPN without getting cable or satellite? I hope so. -- Adam, Baltimore, Maryland.

WatchESPN is a web site that simulcasts ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Goal and ESPN Buzzer Beater. Yes, you can tune in to all five stations on one site -- plus it's the exclusive home of ESPN 3, which airs games not available on the cable TV channels. It's an awesome site, one that any sports fan should check out.

And I have some good news for you. Roku, the Net TV streaming device, has just added WatchESPN to its lineup of more than 100 channels.

But that's where the good news stops.

To watch WatchESPN on Roku, you must subscribe to a cable or satellite service that has the rights to offer the web site. If you do, you can access the channel on Roku by typing in your pay TV service's username and password. If your TV provider doesn't have the rights, you can't watch it on Roku.

Which pay TV services have the rights? The list includes Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Charter, Verizon, Bright House Networks, Midcontinent, AT&T, Cablevision and Cox.

As you may have noticed, neither satellite TV service, Dish or DIRECTV, has yet to secure the rights to offer WatchESPN. But Dish is currently in a programming negotiation with Disney so maybe it will be able to add it soon.
