Black Friday vs. Cyber Monday: Which Has Better Deals?

Q.  I've been reading about all the Black Friday deals, but what about Cyber Monday? Won't there be great deals online, too? -- Yardley, Baltimore, Maryland.

Yardley, that's a great question. As we have chronicled here in recent days, many retailers will offer some eye-popping discounts on Black Friday, or the day
before. (Some stores are kicking off their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving night.)

For instance, Best Buy will offer free phones during its Black Friday sale while Sam's Club will sell a Vizio 70-inch Smart LED TV for under $1,000.

As for Cyber Monday, the online sale that takes place three days after Black Friday, you will also see some sensational discounts. And many of the Black Friday discounts will be available at both retail and online at the same time, and three days later on Cyber Monday.

So the bottom line is that both promotions are well worth your time. The big difference between the two is that Cyber Monday doesn't require you to leave your home to do your shopping while Black Friday forces you to dive into what can be a frenzied store atmosphere.

But the retailers know what they're asking you to do. So, in general, they will offer more discounted products at retail to lure people into the store. There's also a bigger inventory at retail -- usually, that is.

If anyone could buy all the same products online, why would you ever leave home? Answer: You wouldn't so going to a Black Friday sale will give you greater access to more products and, sometimes, at better prices.
