Are Roku's TV Remote Headphones Any Good?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (July 29, 2014) - Editor's Note: TV's Answer Man, aka Swanni, takes your questions regarding how to best use the latest products and services in TV technology. If you have a question about TV technology, ask TV's Answer Man by sending an e-mail to swann@tvpredictions.com

Q. I was thinking of getting a Roku for the wireless headphones feature on the remote control. But is the sound on the remote headphones any good? I'm an audio guy so if the sound sucks, I'm not interested. -- Eddie, Miami.

Eddie, as you note, Roku offers a headphone jack in the remote control on both the Roku 2 and Roku 3 set-tops. This allows you to mute the TV's sound and then listen wirelessly via the in-ear headphones that come with the device.

Th
is is a great feature if you like to watch TV late at night, but don't want to disturb your loved ones or roommates.

However, your question is a good one. If you decide to watch a Netflix or Amazon Prime movie using Roku's headphones, what will it sound like? We all know how important quality audio is to the movie-watching experience.

Well, I recently tested the headphones that come with the Roku 2 and I must say I was not impressed.
The sound was very tinny and lacked the richness and depth you expect from a pair of quality headphones.

However, there is some good news.

If you substitute the Roku headphones with a different set -- a better set, that is -- the sound is very good. For example, I plugged my Sennheiser on-ear headphones into the Roku remote and was amazed at how good they sounded. I listen to several tunes on Pandora and watched the first 10 minutes of the movie, Kill Bill I, and was very pleased with the overall tone and clarity of the audio. You would never know it was being delivered via a wireless connection.

So if you're looking to buy a Roku 2 or 3 for the headphones jack on the remote, do so. But make sure you have a good set of headphones around. The headphones that come with the device are not up to the job.
