What Is An Apple Phablet?

Q. I heard a buddy at work talking about Apple now selling something called a fablet. What's a fablet and should I get one? -- Tony, Las Vegas.

Tony, actually, it's a phablet, not a fablet. And there's a good reason why your buddy was talking about it because Apple this week is likely to introduce at least one of them.

The phablet is a combination phone and tablet, thereby the obvious name. Unlike a phone, which may have a three or four-inch screen, or a tablet, which might be close to 10 inches, the phablet's size is in the middle.

Apple is holding a 'media event' on September 9 at which it's expected to unveil a 4.7-inch edition of the iPhone and a 5.5-inch version. International Business Times writes that the new phones will likely be available at retail on September 19.

Both the 4.7-inch and the 5.5-inch iPhones would be a size upgrade on the most recent iPhone model which has a four-inch diagonal screen. But as far as phablets go, they would not be among the largest. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has a 5.7-inch screen while Sony's Xperia is 6.4 inches.

But the new Apple phones would certain feel bigger to someone accustomed to using the previous edition.

Why would someone want a phablet when you could just get a phone or tablet?
Different strokes for different folks. Some people believe the smart phone screen is too small while others feel the tablet screen is too big. The phablet allows you to carry a device in your pocket that can make phone calls but offers a screen large enough so you don't have to squint. And as for pricing, the phablet's price is about the same as a top-notch smart phone or tablet.

Is the phablet the next big thing, or just a fad? I think that, like its size, it will come down somewhere in the middle. Not everyone will want one, but it will be the right fit for a niche audience.
