Q. I feel odd asking
this, but why doesn't DIRECTV offer any lovemaking movies in HD?
( You know what I mean by that, right?) Wouldn't it increase the buy rates? I mean, me and my
husband would order more, I'll tell you that. -- Kendra,
Kendra, you're right. DIRECTV has
17 channels devoted to content for consenting couples, but not a
single one is in high-def. And it's not that the studios don't
produce the movies in HD. It's DIRECTV's choice to air them in
Now why is this? I think one clue is that DIRECTV isn't the only
TV provider that doesn't offer adult fare in high-def. Most
cable operators don't, either, and the few that do don't even
Basically, the TV providers don't believe that HD makes that
much difference in buy rates. They think people will order the
movies either way, even with those huge prices for monthly
subscriptions for a channel, or a single viewing of a film. So, the theory
goes, why use precious satellite or cable system space for a
high-def adult channel when you could use it for a channel that
more people would appreciate.
Personally, I think that's a mistake. I think buy rates would go
up if the movies were in HD, but DIRECTV and other TV providers
obviously have the research data and feel otherwise.
Last note: DIRECTV in 2004 launched an adult channel in HD and
even charged more because it was in high-def. But the satcaster
soon dropped the channel.
So, Kendra, maybe DIRECTV knows something we don't.
