Why Isn't 24 On Blu-ray?
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (April 23, 2013) - Editor's Note: TV's Answer Man, aka Swanni, takes your questions regarding how to best use the latest products and services in TV technology. If you have a question about TV technology, ask TV's Answer Man by sending an e-mail to swann@tvpredictions.com

Q. My favorite show of all time is 24 starring Kiefer Sutherland. I would love to watch the entire series again -- in HD, of course -- but it's not available on Blu-ray. It's just on DVD. How come? -- Tony, Washington, D.C.

24, which starred Sutherland as a counter-terrorism agent named Jack Bauer, debuted in November, 2001 and aired for eight seasons. The show continues to have a rabid following and there's been talk it will return as a movie, although the latest scuttlebutt says Fox has abandoned the idea.

Now as for the Blu-ray angle, seasons
seven and eight of 24 are available on Blu-ray, but the first six seasons are not. Consequently, as you noted, there isn't a Blu-ray edition of the complete series.

It seems odd considering that 24 does have a strong following, which I noted previously. But if you look closely at the show's history, it starts to make sense.

In the early years of 24, Fox wasn't broadcasting any primetime shows in high-def. The network was slow to the HD dance, a policy which I frequently criticized, as long-time readers of TVPredictions.com know.

So the first several seasons of 24 were not produced in HD, which means the studio would have to convert those shows to high-def to issue a Blu-ray edition of the entire series. And that gets expensive.

But I suspect that at some point -- probably sooner than later -- Fox will invest in the HD conversion and issue 24, The Complete Series on Blu-ray. The collection would likely sell extremely well, particularly since it is now unlikely there will ever be 24, the movie.
