Q. I want to buy a
decent TV for our kids' bedroom, but I don't want to spend much
money. I also don't want any brands I've never heard of. Can you
suggest some cheap TVs with name brands the average person would
know? And it doesn't have to be a big screen. -- Alicia, Marina
Del Rey, California.
Alicia, that's an interesting
question because some of the least expensive sets are from
brands that are not very well known, such as Seiki, Haier and
TCL. While the 'no-name' sets may not be quite up to the
standards of the more popular brands, they still can offer
reliability and decent value.
But if you're most comfortable with the name brands, here are
five suggestions. (And, remember, prices are subject to change.

1. Vizio 24-inch, 1080p LED HDTV: $178
The set, model
E241-A1, has an Amazon customer
rating of four stars out of five, based on 90 reviews.
2. Vizio 32-inch, 720p, LED HDTV: $248
Another Vizio low-priced set. This 32-inch set is not 1080p, but
720p is likely sufficient for your children's bedroom. Plus,
it's an Energy Star-approved TV, which will keep your electric
bill down if your kids watch too much Jake And the Never-Land
3. LG 32-inch, 720p LCD HDTV:
Another 720p TV, this set has a Amazon customer rating of 4.5
stars out of a possible five, based on 49 reviews.
4. Toshiba 32-inch, 720p LED
This 32-inch set has a refresh rate of 120Hz, which helps reduce
motion blur during sports broadcasts and action films (and if
Jake runs amok.) It also
has a good Amazon customer rating: 4.6 stars.
5. Vizio 19-inch, 720p LED/LCD HDTV: $135
Okay, we're getting a little small here with a 19-inch set, but
the price is small, too. At $135, this Vizio set offers a great
value and the Amazon customer rating is 4.3 stars.
