Q. I see there's a new movie with Billy Bob Thornton called Jayne Mansfield's Car. Isn't that about the actress who was in the accident? --  Danielle, Seattle, Washington.

Danielle, Jayne Mansfield's Car, which Billy Bob Thornton directs and stars in, tells the tale of two parts of a Southern family that come together after a death. The film will be released in theaters on September 13.

The title reference is to the 1966 Buick Electra driven by blonde bombshell Jayne Mansfield which crashed in June 1967 near New Orleans, killing Mansfield and setting off an urban myth that still stands to this day.

Mansfield was wearing a blonde wig while behind the wheel and the impact of the crash jettisoned her body and the wig out of the car. Photos taken of the scene showed the wig on the ground, which led to speculation that she had been decapitated by the crash.

However, there's no evidence that this actually happened, although to this date, many people believe it to be true.

The gruesome event later became an even greater spectacle when the car was put on a traveling road exhibit, which Thonton chronicles in the movie. He tells Yahoo Movies that he recalls the car exhibit as a young boy and it had a strong impact on him.

"My father took me to see (Jayne Mansfield's car). They brought it around to our town (in Arkansas), you paid about 50 cents to go inside," he says.
