Apple to Offer Fox Movie Rentals -- But In HDTV?
Steve Jobs is expected to offer more details next month.
By Swanni
That's according to an article in today's Wall Street Journal.
The WSJ report -- and a similar report in the Financial Times -- does not reveal whether the movies will be available in High-Definition.
Apple TV, the company's Internet TV set-top, has experienced disappointing sales in part to a lack of high-def programming available at iTunes. (The Apple TV device, which works with a widescreen, high-def set, wirelessly sends iTunes videos to the TV.)
Consequently, some analysts have speculated that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will reveal next month at the company's annual MacWorld that iTunes will begin offering high-def programming.
Regardless, the Fox deal would allow Apple to offer movie rentals at iTunes for the first time. The Financial Times reports that the agreement will also permit consumers to make legal copies of a movie which could be played back on an iPod or a computer.
Apple now sells new movie releases from Disney at iTunes. Neither the WSJ or the Financial Times reported the pricing plans for the Fox movie rentals.
