Washington, D.C.
(April 3, 2007)
-- AT&T, whose U-verse TV service has struggled, has
come up with a novel idea to attract subscribers:
Free High-Definition TV for one year.
AT&T said today that new U-verse subscribers will get access to its high-def channels at no cost for 12 months.
The same offer will be made to DIRECTV and EchoStar subscribers who sign up for their satellite service using AT&T.

The company, which reportedly has less than 20,000 U-verse TV subscribers, says the offer is good to customers within its 22-state service area. AT&T has rolled out U-verse in slightly less than 20 markets.
"Free access to HD programming for a year gives consumers yet another reason to select AT&T over the competition." said Rick Welday, chief marketing officer for AT&T consumer marketing.
AT&T's U-verse high-def lineup includes roughly 25 channels. The company says the annual HD subscription would be around $240, but will be free to new customers.
The U-verse free HD offer is available until June 30, 2007. The offer to new DIRECTV subscribers is good until June 26, 2007 while the EchoStar deal is available until May 31, 2007.
