-- High-Definition TVs offer the clearest and sharpest
pictures in the world. That is, if you're watching a
program in high-def.
Too often, HDTV owners are disappointed in how standard definition channels, such as CNN, TBS and E!, look on a high-def set. In layman's terms, the technology within the set that displays the ultra-clear digital/high-def signals is not perfectly compatible with the analog signals that display standard definition channels.
So, the SD picture may appear less sharp that it does on your old analog TV.
However, some high-def sets do a better job of presenting SD channels than others. And in the March issue of Consumer Reports, the magazine's staff has rated 40 high-def sets as offering a "very good" or "excellent" picture for standard def.

The magazine said 20 LCD HDTVs provide a "very good" or "excellent" SD picture; five Plasma HDTVs do and 15 DLP rear-projection sets do.

Toshiba's 62-inch DLP will set the standard.
However, Consumer Reports said only four HDTVs deliver an "excellent" picture for standard definition channels. And they are all Toshiba DLP rear-projection sets:
Toshiba 62-inch 62HM196 ($2,500)
Toshiba 62-inch 62MX196 ($2,900)
Toshiba 56-inch 56HMX96 ($2,300)
Toshiba 56-inch 56HM66 ($1,800)
The two 62-inch models were also rated "excellent" for their DVD images.
