Big Screen HDTV Sales On the Rise
TVPredictions.com

Washington, D.C. (August 19, 2010) -- Sales of big-screen HDTVs have jumped in the past year, according to the NPD Group, as reported by Home Media Magazine.

Crediting last year's Digital TV transition, the NPD says June sales of HDTVs 40 to 65 inches rose 26 percent, compared to June 2009. Additionally, sales of sets 55 inches, 60 inches and 63 inches rose by double digits.

Lower prices can also be attributed to the rise in big-screen sales. Home Media writes that the average selling price of a 60-inch set declined by nearly $1,000 in June 2010 compared to June 2009; the average price in June 2010 was $2,152.

“As the analog cutoff approached, many less affluent consumers flocked to purchase inexpensive smaller digital TVs to receive digital broadcasts,” said NPD's Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “This drove strong growth in the sub-32-inch segment that the industry has not been able to maintain.

“The scales have now tipped in favor of larger screen TVs as prices continue to drop and consumer interest turns to connected televisions, LED backlighting, and 3D — features that are more likely to be prominent in larger sets.”

Consequently,
sales of 19-inch to 37-inch HDTVs were down 21 percent this year compared to last year.
