Blockbuster Banking On HDTV DVDs
Company chief says movie downloads will not impact sales of high-def discs.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (November 28, 2006) -- Blockbuster says it has a secret weapon in the fight against movie downloads.

High-Definition DVDs.

Blockbuster CEO John Antioco tells Reuters that consumers will opt for high-def discs when they compare them to the lesser picture quality of movie downloads. He added that the time involved in downloading a film will also discourage online rentals.

"We think packaged media remains king for a long time," Antioco told Reuters.

Blockbuster recently began testing rentals of Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs at approximately 250 stores.

Despite his attack on movie downloads, Antioco said Blockbuster could introduce such a service next year. The video retailing giant is an investor in CinemaNow, the California-based online movie service.

"It's a business that we will need to be in both for competitive reasons and for consumer reasons, to have a full-service brand," he told the news service.

But he added that "packaged" DVD sales will remain the best way for studios to generate extra revenue from movie releases. He said profits will expand when high-def DVDs spread over the next several years.
