Analyst: Blu-ray Sales to Triple In 2008
But Pali Research says it won't slow overall decline in DVD sales.
By Swanni
That's the conclusion of a report from Pali Research's Richard Greenfield, as reported by Reuters.
Greenfield says Blu-ray's victory over rival high-def disc format HD DVD came too late to bail out the sagging DVD industry this year.
Toshiba, the main backer of HD DVD, announced last month that it was pulling the plug on the format at the end of March.
Greenfield estimates that consumer spending on DVDs (SD and HD) will fall four to five percent this year, compared to a two percent drop last year.
He added that Blu-ray won't begin to slow down the decline in overall DVD sales until next year.
The analyst said one reason that DVD sales will fall in 2008 is Wal-Mart's decision to eliminate "dump bins" of discount DVDs.
