Blu-ray Sales Up 35 Percent In
2011
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (December 7,
2011) -- Sales of Blu-ray discs
will rise about 35 percent in the U.S. this year, compared
to 2010, according to a Futuresource analyst, as told to Home
Media Magazine.
Jim Bottoms, the analyst, told the publication that Blu-ray disc
sales will hit about 115 million units this year, compared to 85
million the previous year.
The analyst credited the rise in
Blu sales to an expanding interest in older Blu-ray titles, such
as the Star Wars: The Complete Saga collection, as well as a
reduced resistance to buying more expensive Blu-ray titles. (Blu-ray
releases often cost $5-10 more than their standard-def DVD
editions.)
Bottoms said that Blu-ray sales will rise 42 percent to 63
million units in Europe, with Germany leading the way. And
worldwide, sales will jump 45 percent to 234 million units.
“Blu-ray buy rates
are starting to nudge up here in the
United States and in Europe,” Bottoms
told Home Media.
