Study: 3D TV Growth Would Boost Blu-ray

Washington, D.C. (June 15, 2010) -- IMS Research has found that rising sales of 3D HDTV would also be a major boost for sales of Blu-ray players.

According to Home Media Magazine, the research firm released a survey finding that of the 13 percent of U.S. and Western European consumers who plan to buy a 3D TV in the next two years, 62 percent also plan to buy a 3D-enabled Blu-ray player.

“Consumers are thinking about content,” said an IMS Research spokeswoman. “They’re considering Blu-ray the method of getting the content.”

At the moment, there is little content of any kind available for 3D owners. The studios have released just a handful of movies in 3D and some TV providers, such as DIRECTV, have launched ESPN 3D. But more 3D content is expected to be released in the coming months, particularly if more people buy 3D sets.

But there is still dispute over whether consumers will embrace the new 3D sets, which first went on sale in the spring of 2010.  But IMS forecasts that six million 3D HDTVs will ship worldwide by year's end and 75 million will be shipped by 2015.

However, sets 'shipped' are not the same as sets sold. Additionally, even if consumers buy an HDTV that is 3D-enabled, that doesn't mean they will purchase the goggles and other equipment needed to watch programming in 3D.

In related news, Panasonic yesterday said it expects that two million 3D sets will be shipped this year.

Again, 'shipped' does not mean sold.
