That's according to an article by Reuters.
The products, which use short-wavelength, light-emitting diodes and laser diodes, include handheld mobile devices, traffic lights and high-def DVD players, Reuters reports.
The U.S. Trade Commission will investigate a complaint from a Columbia University professor who is trying to block imports into the U.S. of the products because she says they infringe her patent.
Reuters writes that the companies cited in the federal investigation announcement include Sony, Nokia, Motorola, LG Electronics, and Matsushita.
The wire service says Sony declined to comment on the investigation.
