Study: Consumers Want More Blu-ray Price Cuts

Washington, D.C. (October 20,
2009) --
While Blu-ray player sales have risen sharply in 2009, a new
study says manufacturers will have to lower prices even further
to ensure a strong 2009 holiday season.
Retrevo Pulse, as reported by Twice Magazine, says that 40
percent of the most popular DVD player models now on the market
are Blu-ray players, compared with just 15 percent at this time
in 2008.
The popularity
surge can be attributed to Blu-ray player prices
falling an average of 35 percent and a greater
consumer awareness of the high-def format.
However, Retrevo
says 34 percent of respondents in a nationwide poll said $150 is
the most they will pay for a Blu-ray player. Most Blu-ray
players are still priced above that level.
"Selling off a bunch of old Profile 1.5 players on Black Friday is one thing; getting the price point on a good quality Profile 2.0 player under $150 is another thing," the research firm said, according to Twice.
The company also said 49 percent of respondents said they had never seen a Blu-ray movie, which suggests that the industry still has work to do to persuade consumers to switch from DVD to the high-def disc. Supporting that claim, 62 percent of seniors told the research firm that they believed regular DVDs was all they needed, as did 26 percent of consumers from the age of 25 to 34.
