New Report Says Blu-ray Outsells DVD By 2012
The prediction follows a similar forecast last June from a different group.

Washington, D.C. (August 20, 2008) -- A new study from a research group is forecasting that Blu-ray high-def discs will outsell standard DVDs by 2012.

The Entertainment Merchants Association, a non-profit trade group, predicted in June that Blu-ray disc sales will reach $9.5 billion in 2012, up from $260 million in 2007, and surpassing the SD DVD.

And yesterday, Futuresource Consulting, which is based in London, also said Blu-ray will begin outselling the standard DVD by 2012, at least in overall revenue.

Home Media Magazine reports that the group says U.S. consumers will purchase 45 million Blu-ray discs this year -- four times the amount of last year.

Futuresource also predicts that lower Blu-ray player prices will drive strong 2008 holiday sales for the new category.

"I would be amazed if we don’t see a Blu-ray player in the U.S. at or below $250 by the end of the year,” said Futuresource's Jack Wetherill. “To stimulate consumer traffic in the holiday season, who’s to say there won’t be a player (priced) closer to $200?"

The lowest retail Blu-ray player now costs around $399 although some players can be found for around $300 at some retail stores and web sites.
