Cablevision May Allow You to Chat During Show

Washington, D.C. (September 18,
2012) --
Cablevision is developing a technology that would enable viewers
to talk to other viewers while watching TV via voice or video
chat, reports FierceCable.com.
The web site says Cablevision has submitted a patent application
for the feature which could make social media even more
important to television viewing.
"The system enables a viewer
to find friends, or other like-minded viewers not acquainted
with the viewer, for virtual communal viewing parties,"
Cablevision says in the patent application, according to Fierce
Cable.
The patent says viewers would don headsets and would be able to
chat using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi technology. The feature would
apparently work across multiple devices including smart phones,
game consoles and cable set-tops.
Gaming consoles have for years allowed users to communicate with
fellow players using headsets. But it's unclear if TV viewers,
who tend to be more passive, would be as interested in
communicating with others while watching their favorite shows.
