Cablevision HDTV Subs Double In 2006
The cable operator says it now has more than 500,000 high-def customers.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (November 8, 2006) -- Cablevision says it now has more than 500,000 High-Definition TV subscribers.

James Dolan, Cablevision's CEO and president, made the disclosure today in an earnings conference call following the company's third quarter report.

"
The company surpassed 500,000 high-definition, or HD, video subscribers in the third quarter," Dolan said. "The unmatched value of our product offerings is why Cablevision continues to enjoy industry-leading penetration rates across every one of our cable services."

Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge elaborated that the company had 525,000 HD subscribers at the end of the third quarter, a 16 percent increase from the second quarter. He added that HD subs have doubled since September 2005.

Cablevision now offers 22 high-def channels at no additional cost to digital cable subscribers. But Rutledge says the company will "ultimately" have the ability to carry hundreds of HD channels.

"We
are in the process of architecting our system to grow with the growth of HD," Rutledge said. "As our digital penetration gets deeper, it is now in the mid '70s, we have the ability to move channels from analog to digital and clear that spectrum and use it for HD."
