Cartoon Network Cancels Star Wars Series

By Allison Moore

Washington, D.C. (March 12, 2013) -- The Cartoon Network has cancelled Star Wars: The Clone Wars after five seasons.

The show generated decent ratings and enthusiastic praise from Star Wars fans on Internet message boards. But it appears the animated series got caught up in the politics of Disney's new acquisition of LucasFilm.

Disney has announced that it will produce new films in the Star Wars series and that could conflict with the Clone Wars series, which was a prequel to the movies.

"It
has been a pleasure to work with Lucasfilm on Star Wars: The Clone Wars over the last five years and introducing a whole new audience to this great iconic brand," the Cartoon Network said in a press release.

Ad Week reports that LucasFilm approved the series on a year-to-year basis, which allows the now Disney-owned production company to pull the plug although the Cartoon Network airs the series.

The press release said a new Star Wars series could be in the works, but until it's launched, it's difficult to assume it will ever air with the studio concentrating on the feature films.
