Charter: 100 HD Channels In 2012
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (Nov. 2, 2011) -- Charter Communications, which has lagged behind its rivals in the number of High-Definition channels it carries, said yesterday that it plans to offer more than 100 HD channels "in key markets next year."

Satcasters DIRECTV and Dish Network and telcos AT&T and Verizon have offered more than 100 HD channels for a few years while Charter subscribers sometimes have been stuck with roughly 40 HD channels in some markets.

But Charter yesterday seemed to commit to a stronger high-def lineup in the future. In a conference call with Wall Street analysts following the release of its quarterly report, the cable operator said it's "on target" to offer an average of 75 HD channels by year's end.

However, despite the optimistic talk about adding HD channels, Charter CEO Mike Lovett also dropped a cautionary note about the high cost of carrying channels.

"We’re pleased that we’ve made significant enhancements to the programming choices for our customers this year, at the same time we remain very concerned about alarming rise in fees that local broadcast stations, regional sports networks and national cable programmers are seeking for their content," Lovett said. "In the case of local broadcasters that content has historically been free to our customers.

Lovett called for reform in the retransmission process that often leaves viewers caught in the middle during fee fights between the TV provider and programmer.

"As we have seen in the increasing number of disputes between operators and programmers, it’s the consumer that ultimately gets hurt, either by losing access to programming, even for a short time or paying far too much. The model that the industry is currently working under is more than flawed and in need of remediation," he said.

In other news, Lovett said Charter is testing a TiVo DVR service in Texas and hopes to offer it nationwide in the first half of 2012.
