DIRECTV Drops the Cinemoi Channel
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (July 2, 2013) - DIRECTV yesterday dropped the Cinemoi channel which aired a lineup focusing largely on offbeat films, fashion and style.

Cinemoi, which was in standard-definition on DIRECTV's channel 259, actually paid the satcaster for the satellite space to reach its audience. But DIRECTV tweeted today that Cinemoi was "removed for non-payment. It is undetermined if it will return."

A source close to the situation said it's doubtful that Cinemoi will return, saying "no pay, no play."
Cinemoi, which now is not available on any U.S. provider's lineup, launched on DIRECTV last September.

Cinemoi was not the only channel that has paid DIRECTV for space to air its programming lineup. MAVTV, which offers a mix of sports and films on channel 219, is also a 'pay to play' channel, according to an industry source.

For niche channels like Cinemoi and MAVTV, paying DIRECTV to carry them is a way to expand their audiences in a hurry. The satcaster has more than 20 million subscribers.

But like the man said, if they don't pay, they don't play.
