Comcast: We'll Lose 5M Video Subs In 2010
TVPredictions.com

Washington, D.C. (March 3, 2010) -- Comcast CFO Michael Angelakis says the company will likely lose five million video customers in 2010, according to Home Media Magazine.

Update and correction: Comcast spokesman John Demming says Angelakis did not say the cable operator would lose five million video subs in 2010, as reported yesterday by Home Media Magazine. What the CFO said was that five million Comcast video subscribers for the first time will have another TV provider to choose from in 2010.

For instance, a company such as Verizon or RCN will likely launch service in those areas where the five million homes are located. Consequently, some of the five million might switch to another service, but Angelakis did not say all five million would, as reported by Home Media Magazine.

The publication reports that Comcast CFO Michael Angelakis told an investors conference that any loss would be offset by the addition of 4.3 million Internet and voice customers over the past two years.

The Comcast executive said any loss of video subscribers can be attributed to the sluggish economy and increased competition from other TV providers.

He added that the economy still worries him.

“I’m cautiously optimistic, (but) if there is one side that worries me it is still unemployment and housing,” he said. “Those numbers are still persistently high.”

Swanni's Take:
Now that I fixed the Home Media Magazine story for Comcast, let me add that Comcast did lose 623,000 video subs in 2009. Why? Not enough HD channels!
