Comcast's Offers Panasonic HDTV For 'Special' Price
But the deal is actually the same offered at most retail stores.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (December 6, 2006) -- Comcast is offering subscribers a "special" price on a 42-inch Panasonic Plasma HDTV as an incentive to upgrade to Digital Cable HD.

Problem is, the "special" price of $1,499 is what most retail stores are now charging for the set, model  TH42PX60U.

In addition, Amazon.com is now offering the flat-panel set for $1,399, $100 less than what Comcast subscribers are being asked to pay. And Wal-Mart is selling it for $1,294.

The cable operator is using the Plasma HDTV "special" offer as an incentive to get customers to upgrade to Digital Cable HD.

In commercials airing in the Baltimore, Washington, Delaware and Richmond areas, Comcast says that if subscribers upgrade -- and buy the Panasonic set at the "special" price -- they will receive $100 off their cable bill. (The "special deal" is only available to subscribers in those areas.)

Using a coupon from Comcast, they can also buy the Panasonic set without upgrading for $1,499, which is $300 less than the suggested retail of $1,799. The $1,499 price is the same whether subscribers upgrade or not.

However, despite the suggested retail price, Comcast's "special" price of $1,499 is what most retailers are now charging, according to Consumer Reports.
