Cox: TiVo Service Will Include HD DVRs
The DVR company secures its second cable licensing deal.

By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (August 24, 2006) -- Cox Communications announced today that it will add TiVo's Digital Video Recording service next year.

TiVo will customize its software so it will be compatible with current Cox DVR set-tops. Cox subscribers will be able to download the software, eliminating the need for a new set-top or installation appointment.

David Grabert, a Cox spokesman, told  TVPredictions.com Thursday morning that TiVo will be available on Cox's High-Definition DVRs.

TiVo currently does not have a HDTV DVR available at retail, although it's expected to release one shortly. DIRECTV offers a TiVo DVR that can record high-def signals.

Cox would not reveal a specific launch date for the TiVo service. However, the cable operator said the service would include TiVo's interactive advertising program, which displays various types of ad messages in the DVR interface.

Financial terms of the Cox-TiVo deal were also not disclosed.

Cox is the second cable TV operator to license TiVo's DVR software. Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV operator, is scheduled to add TiVo later this year.

TiVo, which has less than five million subscribers after nearly nine years in business, has been aggressively seeking licensing deals with both cable and satellite operators.

The DVR company recently won a patent lawsuit against the nation's second largest satcaster EchoStar, although the case is on appeal. Top satcaster DIRECTV, a longtime TiVo marketing partner, has decided to use its own DVR. However, the companies have agreed to continue service to existing DIRECTV-TiVo customers.

Swanni Sez:
The Cox announcement is tremendous news for TiVo and should silence doubters (myself included) who have suggested the company might not survive in the long term.

I have said (repeatedly) for several years that TiVo can't compete unless it partners with cable and satellite operators. Now with Cox and Comcast on board -- and EchoStar as a possible licensee due to the patent case -- TiVo's future looks much brighter.
