DIRECTV Adds 5 HD Channels
Washington, D.C. (January 31,
today continued its new aggressive policy of expanding the HD
channel lineup, adding five more high-def networks this morning.
The satcaster, which added three new HD channels last week (TV
Land, Lifetime Movie Channel and Investigation Discovery, today
added the following in high-def:
CNN Headline News
The Cooking Channel
Independent Film Channel
For nearly two years, DIRECTV dramatically cut back on HD
additions, citing program acquisition costs. Some executives
even suggested that their subscribers already had the 'best'
channels in HD and therefore new additions were not needed.
But a little over a year ago, the satcaster once again started
adding high-def channels, beginning with the addition of AMC,
Turner Classic Movies and BBC America. And last October, one
DIRECTV executive predicted that his company will offer
all channels in HD by 2016.
The nation's largest satellite TV service has apparently
concluded that its subscribers want more HD channels and,
possibly, will switch to another provider if they don't get
them. Consequently, odds are strong that DIRECTV will add even
more HD channels in the coming months.
