DIRECTV Adds AMC HD

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (Sept. 9, 2011) -- As expected, DIRECTV this morning added AMC HD to its High-Definition lineup.

The satcaster announced last week that it would add the channel which features such Emmy Award-winning shows as Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.

Since DIRECTV stopped adding basic cable channels in high-def nearly two years ago, the satcaster has been flooded with demands for AMC HD as well as many others such as IFC, Turner Classic Movies and National Geographic Wild.

DIRECTV has stated recently that it believes that it offers the HD channels that people watch the most. But AMC was a particularly large omission.

The satcaster may be reconsidering its basic cable HD policy in light of its recent second quarter financial report showing the satcaster had the smallest increase in net subscribers in its history. While DIRECTV has hit the brakes on adding basic cable in HD, many of its rivals have added AMC HD, BBC America HD, National Geographic Wild in recent months, possibly prompting some DIRECTV subscribers to switch providers.

DIRECTV HD viewers today will be able to watch such AMC shows and movies as The Kingdom, The Hurricane and Broken Arrow in high-def.
