Washington, D.C. (December 11, 2008) -- The Blu-ray edition of The Dark Knight sold 600,000 copies on Tuesday, the day it was released, shattering previous records for high-def disc sales.
Home Media Magazine reports that The Dark Knight sold a total of three million units on Tuesday, which means the Blu-ray sale represented about 20 percent of overall disc sales.
Warner Home Video reportedly shipped one million Blu-ray copies to stores in hopes that the Batman summer blockbuster would generate unprecedented sales. Studio executives were particularly encouraged by reports that 147,000 new Blu-ray players were sold during Black Friday week.

“In the first two days across those three territories, Blu-ray Disc sales are running between 25 percent and 30 percent of total (disc) sales, which is a massive number,” Warner's Ron Sanders told Home Media. "We had expected Blu-ray to account for a significant percentage of sales, but not quite this high, which speaks well for the format. It’s really catching on with consumers.”
Sanders said that the Blu-ray edition of The Dark Knight could sell one million units by the weekend.
Home Media writes that Iron Man, the Robert Downey Jr. action hit, previously owned the Blu-ray sales record, selling 500,000 disc in its first week. But The Dark Knight broke that record in one day.
